"In Our Hands" - Ahmedabad's Sustainability Festival

Month of April celebrates Earth day and we can witness most of the happenings and events are focussed on Earth’s health in this month. One such event was conducted in city of Ahmedabad, Gujarat on 9th and 10th April, 2022. The name of the event ‘In our Hands’ aligns with the concept of being accountable for preserving and protecting our planet. It was hosted by ‘The Greenstraw Café’ in Thaltej, Ahmedabad.

The event started on 9th April at The Greenstraw house, Thaltej and it kicked off at 4.30 PM with various brands ready to display their products. The event witnessed confluence of many sustainable brands. These ranged from clothing, children toys, accessories and products used in daily routine to products used in decorations, celebrations and gifting . The most popular stall among the children was the brand 'Reorigin'. They have managed to beautifully hand craft eco friendly, non toxic, no plastic toys for children. The beautiful design of crochet toys, the functional and fun wooden toys had all the eyes. Though the Ahmedabad temperatures were soaring at this time, a gradual increase in the footfall was a real mood lifter. A lot of hustle was observed across the stalls post 7 PM and continued till 10 PM on both the days. The most re-energising drink of the event was the fermented beetroot concoction, look alike Kombucha but 'not a kombucha'. Vivasha along with her father, runs 'Caveman Success' a 20 year old company which brings traditional food knowledge on the table. From Khadi fabric of 'The K cult' to upcycled jewellery by 'By Nirjari', attendees had fun exploring the sustainable side of fashion.

One of the attendees, Anjali Mehta mentioned "My experience has been first of its kind. The pop up event was a blend of sustainable experience with brands ranging from clothing to wonderful pottery. I missed attending the wokrshops but surely looking forward to one in future" .

Not only the event hosted sustainable brands but organised number of workshops for promoting actions for sustainable living. The total of 8 workshops were organised over two days. All the facilitators for the workshops are practitioner in their field as they conducted live sessions and engaged with all the queries. The deo making workshop had the raw ingredients and attendees participated in making their own jars of natural deo. One of the attendee exclaimed flaunting the jar “this tiny jar will last me 6 months”. The microgreen workshop provided with two trays, seeds, compost and soil-less growing medium. The focus was on to getting the attendees start as they reach their home and hence, the workshops were complimented with the starter kits to kick start the process after the event. Shreyans Rami was delighted to attend the workshops and mentioned "hands on experience of the workshops have made things easier to understand and these should happen more often".

Our team interacted with the founder of the café, Pooja Mathur, She said “the event is an conscious effort to bring together the community in the sustainability space”. The event had a motivating footfall with conversation sparkling from sustainable living to falling back to the roots.

The event was organised in the premise of The Greenstraw Café, Thaltej. It is an eco-conscious café which uses only reusable cutlery and steel straws. The menu is restricted to few items to avoid any kind of food waste. So, with no regrets of generating plastics or disposables items, people enjoyed treating themselves.
